How it works

From draft to a revision checklist

The rubric sets the frame. Your judgment decides which feedback belongs in the next draft.

  1. 01

    Choose the intended rubric

Select SAT-style, GRE, IELTS or TOEFL Academic criteria before submitting. Each rubric uses its own scoring scale.

  2. 02

    Add the complete essay

Paste or upload at least 100 words. The web editor accepts up to 20,000 characters from TXT, PDF or DOCX files.

  3. 03

    Revise from the evidence

Use the score estimate as orientation, then work through the detailed feedback, strengths to preserve and prioritized improvements.

Supported scoring frames

One essay, four distinct scales

Pick the rubric that matches the writing exercise. The page enforces that rubric’s denominator when it validates the returned report.

SAT-style

1–4 scale · whole points

A legacy SAT-style frame for organization, development, language use and command of written English.

GRE Analytical Writing

0–6 scale · half points

A text-only estimate of analytical writing quality, organization, support and language control.

IELTS Writing

0–9 bands · half bands

A writing-band estimate guided by task response, coherence, vocabulary and grammatical range.

TOEFL Academic Discussion

0–5 scale · whole points

An estimate for the response text alone, without the original discussion posts or classroom context.

Interpretation boundary

A score is a revision signal, not a credential

Standardized writing scores depend on the task, source material, timing, examiner guidance and context. This tool has only the submitted text and rubric.

  • The grader sees the essay text and selected rubric, not the original assignment prompt.
  • It does not see TOEFL discussion posts, IELTS task instructions, sources, lecture material or timed writing conditions.
  • Scores are automated estimates for revision, not official exam scores, classroom grades or disciplinary evidence.
  • A human reviewer should make every consequential academic decision and check whether feedback fits the actual task.

Useful when judgment stays human

Faster feedback, with the right boundary

Students and test-prep learners

Practice applying a rubric, find revision priorities and compare successive drafts without mistaking an estimate for an official score.

Educators and tutors

Create a fast first-pass feedback outline, then add prompt-specific judgment, examples and the context only a teacher has.

Writers and applicants

Inspect organization, support, clarity and language control before asking a qualified reader for final feedback.

Questions before grading

Essay Grader FAQ

Is the AI Essay Grader free?

The current essay-grading route is available with a free account and does not require a paid plan. You must sign in because the grading service is account-based. Completed reports are normally queued for account history, and temporary anti-abuse limits still apply.

Which rubrics can I use?

The page currently supports a legacy SAT-style four-point rubric, GRE Analytical Writing on a six-point scale, IELTS Writing on a nine-band scale and TOEFL Academic Discussion on a five-point scale. Rubrics with inconsistent or incomplete source criteria are intentionally not offered.

Is the score official?

No. It is an automated, rubric-guided estimate. It is not issued or endorsed by College Board, ETS, IELTS, British Council, IDP or any school, and it should not replace an official examiner or teacher.

Does the grader know the original prompt?

No. The service receives the essay text and selected rubric only. Because it cannot inspect the original prompt or source materials, task-response feedback can be incomplete. Include only the response itself and assess prompt-specific requirements separately.

What does the report include?

A successful report includes a score estimate on the selected rubric scale, detailed feedback, strengths to keep and areas to improve. The result page enforces the selected scale even if an upstream response contains a conflicting denominator.

Which files can I upload?

You can upload TXT, PDF and DOCX files up to 5 MB. Text extraction happens in your browser. PDFs are limited to the first 25 pages, and image-only scans need OCR before they contain selectable text.

What happens to my essay?

Nothing is sent while you type or while a file is being read. When you choose Grade essay, the extracted text is sent to the grading service, which attempts to queue the completed report for account history. A report can still be returned if history storage is temporarily unavailable. Do not submit confidential or personally identifying student material you are not allowed to process.

Can a teacher use this as the final grade?

It should be used as a revision or triage aid only. Final grades require the actual assignment, course expectations, accommodations, source material and human judgment. Automated feedback can also be incomplete or wrong.

Separate questions, separate tools

Review writing quality, authorship signals and sources using their own evidence

An essay score estimate does not tell you who wrote the text or whether its sources overlap with published material.
